In collobaration with UNDP, Y-PEER Somalia established a dedicated ICT lab for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) at Tilmame Youth Hub , it aims at empowering PWDs, a marginalized community often overlooked in social and economic development initiatives.

This project addresses the persistent issue of exclusion and limited opportunities faced by PWDs in Somalia. Despite their potential to contribute to the community, societal barriers and inadequate support hinder their economic empowerment and social integration. The project is critical as it provides a tailored solution to break these barriers through digital skills training, inclusive employment workshops, and ICT-driven income-generation initiatives. By fostering inclusivity and empowering PWDs, the project not only addresses a crucial social justice issue but also contributes to the overall social and economic development of the target community.

The project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 4 (Quality Education): Enhancing digital skills and access to education for PWDs.
  • SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): Facilitating job placements and income-generating activities for economic empowerment.
  • SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities): Addressing societal inequalities by promoting inclusivity and advocating for disability rights.

The project promotes diverse and inclusive societies by targeting PWDs in Somalia. Y-PEER Somalia prioritizes inclusivity regardless of various personal attributes. The peer-to-peer approach ensures an inclusive learning environment where PWDs, irrespective of background, benefit from tailored support. Through comprehensive digital skills training and inclusive employment workshops, we actively promote gender equality by ensuring equal opportunities for both male and female PWDs. Moreover, the project purposefully supports and champions other minority groups within the community, fostering a safe and inclusive space for all participants. Y-PEER Somalia’s approach considers the local cultural context, recognizing the importance of cultural diversity. By working closely with the community and businesses, we strive to break cultural barriers and challenge stereotypes, promoting an environment where everyone, regardless of whatever background, and natural abilities can participate and thrive.
